This is a question we get asked a lot: “When is the right time to start with FinOps?”. The best answer is “As soon as you start on your cloud journey”. However, here are 4 possible points in time, in decreasing order of preferred engagement point:

  1. As soon as you start using the cloud – This is by far the best time, as you will ‘bake in’ cloud cost management and optimisation from the start. And we all know that prevention is much easier than correction. It also allows you to start small, and grow in line with the growth in cloud spend.
  2. As soon as you read about FinOps – Organisations that realise that the cloud requires a new set of skills recognise DevOps, SecOps, SysOps as skills to acquire and excel in. More and more, they also recognise FinOps as one of those skills. So what are you waiting for?
  3. As soon as you recognise the opportunity – You are consuming significant amounts of cloud services, and your bill, well, it starts to be recognised at senior leadership level. In particular as it keeps going up. Mostly justified, but in the back of your mind you start to realise that you may be wasting some money here.. Removing 25% and upwards of Cloud Wastage becomes an attractive initiative.
  4. When your cloud cost has gone out of control – Now this is by far the worst time to start deploying FinOps. If anything because this could have been prevented, significant amounts of money have gone to waste, and making changes now is hard.  Unfortunately, this is still the point where many first seriously engage with FinOps capabilities. Don’t be one of them.
